Defining Your Brand's Voice

article header

Defining a voice for your brand will assist you with social media posts, website copy, and any other type of communication your business will be engaging in. When you know the tone of voice your brand has, it will change the way you word things.
Research your competition.

A great place to start is by observing the tone of voice used by similar companies in your industry. What do you like about the tone of voice they use, what don't you like, and what will you do differently. Choosing anywhere from 3 - 5 different companies to compare should do the trick.
Set your brand values.

What matters to you and your business? What do you stand behind. Think of the voice you want to use to express that. If it's a strong value, choose a stronger, more direct brand voice. Figure out how that translates to captions and slogans.
Observe your audience's voice.

If you want to reach a specific audience, you need to make sure your brand's tone of voice matches that of your audience. Perfecting this aspect of your brand's tone of voice will better your communication with your target audience.

The next steps are to write out a few captions and sayings you like, in your brand voice. Say them out loud. If they don't sound right coming from your human mouth, then go back to the drawing board until it feels authentic.
"Tone of voice is expression of values."

Take your time and fine tune this, and iterate upon it. Just like people, values and businesses also change. Adapt your brand voice with that in mind.
