Julie Jules
Celebrity Makeup Artist
Hailing from New Jersey, Julie Jules moved to LA when she was 17 years old, during her junior year of high school. A summer vacation turned permanent residence when the family hosting her suggested she stay in Los Angeles. With her mother's approval, her guardianship was signed over and Julie began her senior year of high school in Los Angeles. In Julie's words, "Sometimes life presents you an opportunity, and it blossoms into this beautiful thing. You don't always have to know what it's going to be."
"Sometimes life presents you an opportunity, and it blossoms into this beautiful thing. You don't always have to know what it's going to be."
In the beginning of Julie's journey, she didn't know makeup was something she wanted to do. Julie went to college and graduated with a degree in Health Administration, but she always had a passion for makeup, and it was always present. She credits watching her mother put on her makeup and the stories her mother would tell her of growing up in Haiti, using natural elements to makeup her face.
Whilst between jobs and staying on a friend's air mattress, Julie got the opportunity to observe a Los Angeles make up artist first hand, after her friend had invited one over to do her makeup. She loved watching the process and how happy the artist and client were. From that day, she told herself she wanted to do makeup in LA at fashion shows, TV, everything. She wanted to be excited about what she did. This was the beginning of her makeup artist journey.
Write down your goals.
Julie immediately started practicing by working with up and coming photographers and models, doing makeup for free and shooting in the evenings to create content.
Create content.
She focused on creating a body of work to display on her instagram, using it as a portfolio for all her collaborations with models and photographers. She networked and met a director and began working on music video shoots, always perfecting her skills and preparing for new opportunities.
Keep practicing your skill.
Once the events of 2020 hit, Julie described it as "Dooms Day." At the time, she was freelancing and her work was totally dependent upon group gatherings (weddings, photoshoots, video shoots, etc). With such huge uncertainty, she went looking for solutions and landed on creating a website, and began teaching makeup application through online sessions. It turned out to be a surprise success. With her clients being on video calls all day, they wanted to learn the skill. The pandemic had grown Julie's business and helped her discover her love of teaching the skill of makeup.
