Know Who It’s For

Your business does not have to be for everyone. In fact, it gets easier to explain, design, price, and promote when you know who you are trying to reach.
This does not mean you are excluding people forever. It just means you are choosing a clear starting point. When you know who your business is for, you can make better decisions about what to sell, what to say, where to show up, and what kind of experience to create.
Start with the people most likely to need, want, or understand what you offer.
Name your likely customer
Write down who you think would buy from you first.
Keep this simple. You can describe them by life stage, need, style, job, interest, or situation. Example: “new moms,” “creative founders,” “local homeowners,” “people planning events.”
List what they care about
Write 3–5 things that matter to them.
Think about what they want, what they avoid, and what makes something feel worth buying. This can include price, quality, speed, style, trust, convenience, or meaning.
List what they struggle with
Write down what feels hard, annoying, confusing, or time-consuming for them.
This helps you understand how your business can be useful. Example: “They want to start posting online but don’t know what to say.”
Find where they already spend time
Write down where your customer looks for ideas, help, or products.
This could be Instagram, TikTok, Google, local events, referrals, Facebook groups, newsletters, markets, or stores.
Write how your business helps them
Connect your offer to their actual need.
Use simple language. Example: “My business helps them save time,” “feel more confident,” “find a meaningful gift,” or “make their home feel better.”
Choose one customer to focus on first
Pick the clearest group for now.
You can expand later. For now, choose the group that feels easiest to understand and reach.
Example text:
“My first customer is a creative founder who has a lot of ideas but needs help turning them into clear next steps.”
